King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) Metro Station
The King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) Metro Station is set to play a pivotal role within the newly established Riyadh Metro network. It serves as a central interchange for Line 1, and also serves as the endpoint for Line 4, which connects passengers to the airport, as well as Line 6. Additionally, the station provides access to the local monorail via a skybridge. The KAFD Metro Station is a multi-level structure featuring six platforms across four public floors, complemented by two levels of underground parking. Its integration into the urban fabric of the financial district is a testament to its responsiveness to the functional needs of a versatile transportation hub and the district’s future aspirations. Beyond the conventional station concept, this project transforms the station into a dynamic, multi-functional public space, offering more than just a transient location; it becomes a striking public hub within the city.
The station’s design strategically locates it at the heart of a network comprising pathways, skybridges, and metro lines as envisioned in the KAFD master plan. Extensive analysis of connectivity patterns and traffic flow on the site has informed the organization of pedestrian routes within the building, enhancing internal circulation and mitigating congestion. This results in a distinctive three-dimensional lattice structure, characterized by a sequence of opposing sine-waves. These waves are derived from the repetition and variation in the frequency of daily traffic flows within the station, essentially forming the backbone of the building’s circulation. This sine-wave motif is seamlessly extended to the station’s exterior, closely aligned with its internal layout, thus translating the architectural concept into the station’s overall appearance.
